Morning ablutions completed I put on a comfortable cotton sari, they are so cool and it was such a pretty thing from Orissa, and marched kitchenwards. To cook for tomorrow. I hate being rushed, and we got news that Cook's husband was in hospital, so who knew how long she was going to be AWOL? The heckling started. My sis said, TV serial Mom cooking in a sari! Where's your make up Mom? Tanu maasi jewellery!
Heckling notwithstanding, I sallied forth and began cooking ops with the efficiency of a newly wed. I do cook well, but not often, so I am just a teeny bit out of touch! I could not find anything, not even a knife! I opened the kitchen cupboard and out popped several skeletons locked inside by the Cook! This always happens when she goes AWOL. Okay, skeletons were sorted with a sigh. Happily multi tasking, the cookers were soon bubbling. I keep enough stocks of frozen meat so there were fewer veggies to chop!
The family was actually jubilant that they would get yummy stuff that I usually refuse to cook. I don't like cooking, period. I have... other talents. I'm good at.... other stuff! Masterchef is such an irritating programme! I never deign to watch!
I got lost in my own thoughts. The cook's husband in hospital, what could be wrong? Probably a cirrhotic liver, I thought given his drunkenness! He is a useless man. A complete waste of space, and a bane to Cook's existence. They have living quarters in the same building, in a pukka shed at the back. Said Cook's husband has not had a job in almost 10 years, he has not been able to bring home a single naya paisa. My Cook is the sole earning member. We pay her quite well, and I give her a lot of clothes for herself and her daughters. She, single handedly has put her daughters into University. Yes, all three are in college! If it is liver, I thought to myself, wouldn't it be better if he should just die? I sound callous, I know. It sounds mean! But... he hammers her up regularly, we have called the cops who have hammered him and let him go.... he locked the poor lady out one night.... the atrocities she has had to suffer at his hands are indescribable. He has saddled her with three children in the quest for a son, and has the temerity to say his girls are useless! What will they gain by going to college? So, I thought, maybe it will be better if he dies.
Then I thought of my dear Cook. She is attractive, wears pretty clothes, jingling bangles, red teeka and smiling. Were her husband to die, she would be forced to wear white, would never wear a bangle again, would have any number of prohibitions laid upon her, all for being a widow. She would not have an easy life without him. Why does her happiness, her acceptance in society, her very essence have to depend upon her being a suhaagan? This thought was hounding me all the while that I was cooking. That she suffers at his hands while he is alive, is probably perceived as a more desirable fate!
So I thought, we have a vibrant community out there on the social media, let me ask them! So guys, what do you think? Will she be the better off if the good for nothing dies? Or is it in her social interest for him to be alive?
I want your opinions, readers, I want your comments, your point of view. Please leave your remarks and opinions, I would really like to know what you think. I want to feel the pulse of a woman in society. Let me know...
